Finnish postal workers now mowing the grass

A remarkable message could recently be found on the website of the Dutch stamp magazine 'Filatelie'. The site reported that Finnish postal workers deliver fewer and fewer letters. Therefore, the employers are trying feverishly to find alternative tasks for the postmen concerned. And they certainly have found something! On an experimental basis, the postal workers will be mowing pasture, every Tuesday from May to September. Whether this means that the jobs of professional gardeners are at risk is not yet known...

Auction house Schwanke (G.) taken over by Christoph Gärtner

(Bietigheim-B./cw). On 27 April of this year the foundations were laid for the future of the philatelic auction house Schwanke GmbH in Hamburg (Germany). The firm has been taken over by the auction house of Christoph Gärtner and will, from now on, go through life as ‘Auction Galleries Hamburg vormals Schwanke GmbH‘ (‘Auction Galleries Hamburg formerly Schwanke GmbH’). The next auction under the new name will be held on 2 and 3 September 2016, at the usual location (Reichenhof, Kontorhausviertel, Hamburg, see picture).
Schwanke’s former owner, Hans-Joachim Schwanke, about the takeover: ‘I am pleased that our customers will continue to be supported by our reliable at its usual location. In addition, they will benefit from our access to the CG group of companies, that has a competent, worldwide network.’
The new owner, Christoph Gärtner emphasizes that it is of great importance that philatelists, collectors and investors can still fall back on the experienced Schwanke team, that will continue to be active in the far north of Germany.
From 1 July 2016, the official address is: ‘Auction Galleries Hamburg vormals Schwanke GmbH’, Kleinel Reichenstrasse 1, 20457 Hamburg (Germany). The way the communication between customers and the new firm is structured will be similar to the situation before.
Earlier, in 2015, the Christoph Gärtner auction house already integrated the well-known auction house of Edgar Mohrmann into its group of companies, thus contributing to the preservation of the the existing Hamburger auction culture.

USPS posters promote NY2016

The international philatelic exhibition ‘World Stamp Show/NY2016’ is coming nearer and nearer. Visitors of all American post offices will be aware of the event: the United States Postal Service is promoting the exhibition heavily with full-colour posters that are displayed in every lobby. The U.S. Postal Service is one of the sponsors of ‘World Stamp Show/NY2016’; the USPS will be present with a large sales area.
On the posters, a red and a blue postage stamp can be seen; it concerns the American stamps that were issued in 2015 to announce the event. The posters also contains useful information, including the dates the exhibition will be held (from 28 May until 4 June). And of course the web address of the event is mentioned: The posters exist in large and small sizes, depending on the size of the postal facility.
‘World Stamp Show/NY2016’ will take place at the Javits Center in New York City; admission is free.

Water damage APRL: your help is needed

On March 14, the American Philatelic Research Library suffered minor water damage. The damage was caused by construction activities in the new library (see our AIJP News item of 4 April 2016). Luckily the damage was minimized, thanks to emergency preservation measures. Still, a small number of auction catalogues were not salvageable.
The library asks for your help. If you have catalogues from any of these auction houses that you no longer need, you can help to rebuild the APRL collection by donating them. In that case you are requested to contact Betsy Gamble by email ( or by phoning her on +814-933-3803 (extension 242), in order to make sure that the catalogues that you wish to donate are still needed.
Here is a list of auction catalogues that were damaged by the leaking roof of the APRL:
